Professor Val Edwards-Jones

Biography

Val is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Microbiology at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. She also serves as a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention at Huddersfield University, UK, and the Medical University in Perm, Russia. Additionally, she is the Technical Director of Microsan Ltd, a company specialising in natural cleaning products using essential oils, and an Independent Microbiology Consultant for Essential Microbiology Ltd.

As an independent microbiology consultant, Val's work has encompassed advising on a range of topics, including the impact of single-use plastics on infection control, the role of UVC in reducing environmental contamination, and the evaluation of innovative microbial identification methods using Fourier Transformed Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy. She has also contributed to the development of novel treatments for fungal nail infections, an online training program for Legionella risk management, antiseptic treatments for wound infections, biofilm-based wound care, and has served on the National Advisory Committee for Antimicrobial Stewardship in wound care and infection control for burn centers.

Val’s career in microbiology spans over 45 years, with 20 years of experience in diagnostic microbiology within the NHS and 21 years as an academic researcher. Her research interests include wound infections, toxic shock syndrome, alternative treatment strategies, the use of essential oils as antimicrobial agents, and the rapid diagnosis of infections using mass spectrometry.

She is also a consultant microbiologist for the Channel 4 TV show Embarrassing Bodies and frequently provides expert advice on microbiology-related topics for various TV programs and PR companies.
