FAQs about weight loss

What Causes Obesity?

Obesity develops when you consistently consume more calories than your body burns through daily activities and physical exercise. While this may seem straightforward, the underlying reasons for weight gain can often be complex and multifaceted.

  • Lifestyle Habits: Unhealthy eating patterns and a lack of physical activity are primary contributors to excess weight.
  • Psychological Factors: Emotional eating or stress can lead to overconsumption of high-calorie foods.
  • Medications: Certain drugs, like steroids and insulin, may contribute to weight gain.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions such as hypothyroidism can slow metabolism, making weight loss more challenging.
  • Genetics: Emerging research indicates some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to obesity, affecting how their bodies store fat or regulate appetite.

In theory, weight loss is about consuming fewer calories and increasing physical activity. However, with more than 60% of adults in England classified as overweight or obese, the reality highlights a widespread issue. Modern lifestyles often promote overeating and inactivity, making sustainable weight loss a significant challenge for many.

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin problem that affects most teenagers, meaning that it is predominantly viewed as an adolescent problem, however, it can persist into adulthood.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is essentially a measure of body size. It is a calculation based on your height and weight that is used to work out if your weight is healthy. Your BMI will be calculated as a number which represents your height to weight ratio i.e. 27 kg/m2. The following table shows BMI range categories for adults associated with weight status:

BMIWeight status
Below 18.5You are in the underweight range/tr>
18.5 – 24.9You are in the healthy range
25.0 – 29.9You are in the overweight range
30.0 and aboveYou are in the obese range

Why am I struggling to lose weight?

No two individuals are the same, which means everyone responds differently to food and exercise. Losing weight can be challenging and often takes time. For some, dieting and physical activity alone may not lead to meaningful, long-term weight loss, or maintaining the progress can feel impossible. That’s where medical intervention can make a difference.

Do I need to continue with diet and exercise whilst on medication?

Absolutely. The weight loss medication we prescribe are to be taken in combination with a sensible diet and exercise and that is when you see the most effective weight loss.

What is the difference between Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Ozempic (semaglutide)?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Ozempic (semaglutide) are medications designed to help with blood sugar management in type 2 diabetes and, in some cases, weight loss. While they share some similarities, their mechanisms of action and effectiveness vary. Mounjaro is a dual agonist that targets two hormones:

  • GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1): Helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.
  • GIP (Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide): Enhances insulin secretion and has an additional role in appetite regulation.

This dual-action approach makes Mounjaro unique and may contribute to greater effectiveness in both blood sugar control and weight loss. Ozempic targets only the GLP-1 receptor. By mimicking GLP-1, it helps the body release insulin, reduce glucose production in the liver, and slow digestion, which can lead to reduced appetite and improved blood sugar control.re some similarities, their mechanisms of action and effectiveness vary.

Mounjaro is an injection pen used for weight loss and to treat type 2 diabetes.

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is tirzepatide. Tirzepatide targets two key hormonal receptors: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). By mimicking the actions of these two naturally occurring hormones, Mounjaro has demonstrated a greater potential for weight loss compared to medications that act solely on GLP-1.

Mounjaro should start working straight away, but it could take several weeks until it has a noticeable effect on regulating your blood sugar level and impacting your appetite and eating habits.

You should expect to lose up to 20% of your body weight in 18 months.

You will attend a consultation for your initial appointment, which with include a full medical history. Depending on your consultation, you may be prescribed Mounjaro injections. The injection will be done by yourself at home with full intructions given.

To help your body adjust to the medication and improve the likelihood of long-term success, it’s important to follow the gradually increasing dosage schedule provided.

Typically, treatment begins with a starting dose of 2.5 mg of Mounjaro. This dose is increased every four weeks (or as recommended, based on your individual needs) until you reach your optimal maintenance dose, which may be 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg.

You will come into clinic every month for an assessment when we will review your dosage. This is the perfect opportunity to ask any questions, with telephone advice always available over the phone in between appointments.
